Research interest: Sustainability Education, SEDwise
Ellen Vandenplas holds a masters degree in Educational Sciences. Since 2017, Ellen supports courses and faculties at Ghent University in interating sustainability in education. Sinds august 2019 she is affliated as a doctoral researcher. Her PHD focus on climate change education and the question on how to handle existential concerns of students in view of climate change. Moreover she is interested in learning for sustainable development (ESD) and always searching to what extent ESD can ‘grow’ and ‘flourish’ in the education practice of a university and be ‘significant’ at the same time.
Previously she worked for Ecocampus – the Sustainable Higher Education Program - of the Flemish government where she supported universities and colleges to integrate sustainable development into their education, research and social services. She started her career as a project coordinator for the Center for Nature and Environmental Education.
Ellen Vandenplas is licentiaat Pedagogische Wetenschappen. Sinds 2017 ondersteunt Ellen opleidingen en faculteiten aan de UGent bij het integreren van duurzaamheid in onderwijs. Sinds augustus 2019 is zij verbonden als doctoraatsonderzoeker aan het CDO. Haar PHD focust zich op het pedagogisch omgaan met existentiële bezorgdheden van studenten in het licht van klimaatverandering. Bovendien is ze geïnteresseerd in educatie voor duurzame ontwikkeling en altijd op zoek naar hoe EDO kan 'groeien' en 'bloeien' in onderwijspraktijken aan de universiteit en tegelijkertijd significant kan zijn.
Voorheen werkte Ellen ook voor het programma Ecocampus – Duurzaam Hoger Onderwijs - van de Vlaamse overheid waar ze universiteiten en hogescholen ondersteunde bij het integreren van duurzame ontwikkeling in hun onderwijs, onderzoek en maatschappelijke dienstverlening. Ellen begon haar loopbaan als als projectcoördinator voor het Centrum Voor Natuur –en Milieueducatie.
