Social movements and transitions

Social movements and their organisations have been hegely influential in the course of history: voting rights, labour rights, social security, women's rights, environmental awareness. Without social struggle, deliberation and cooperation they would not have been realised. It seems logical that this will also be necessary in the transition to more sustainable societies. After all, transitions come with deep changes in societal structures, cultures and daily practices, and these will not develop without coping with resistance and conflicting interests.
Yet, the research about the role of social movements is limited in the transition field. This research project takes an action research approach, cooperating with the Transition Network Civil Society, to fill up this gap a little bit. It starts from an interest in the strategies of social movements that want to influence sustainability transitions. How do they define problems and solutions? Which kind of change do they aim for? How do they try to gain influence? Where do they succeed and which problems do they face?

Sociale bewegingen en hun organisaties hebben in de loop van de geschiedenis grote invloed uitgeoefend: stemrecht, arbeidsechten, uitbouw sociale zekerheid, vrouwenrechten, aandacht voor milieu. Zonder sociale strijd, overleg en samenwerking zouden ze niet gerealiseerd zijn. Het lijkt logisch te veronderstellen dat dit ook zo zal zijn voor de transitie naar een duurzamere samenleving. Zo’n transitie vergt immers diepgaande veranderingen in maatschappelijke structuren, cultuur en dagelijkse praktijken. En dat zal niet verlopen zonder tegenstand en conflicterende belangen.
Toch is er tot nu toe in het transitie-onderzoek relatief weinig geschreven over de rol van sociale organisaties. Dit project volgt een actieonderzoek aanpak om met en over het Transitienetwerk Middenveld een beetje van die leemte opvullen. Het vertrekt vanuit een interesse in de strategieën van sociale bewegingen die de transitie naar een duurzame samenleving als doel vooruit schuiven. Hoe formuleren zij problemen en oplossingen? Welk soort verandering streven ze na? Hoe proberen ze invloed te winnen? Wat lukt er en welke problemen duiken op?
