Research Project

System analysis of sustainability in higher education in Flanders

Running from 2017 to 2018.
Funded by Vlaamse Overheid - Ecocampus.

Do Flemish universities and university colleges pay attention to sustainable development in research, education and student activities? Which trends encourage or discourage sustainable higher education? What are interesting and promising experiments in sustainability research, sustainability education, sustainable campus operations, or attention for sustainability in internationalisation policies, student activities, etc.?

This project - funded by the Ecocampus programme of the Flemish government - analysed how and to what extent sustainability is embedded in Flemish higher education today. Inspired by the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions, we investigated the landscape, regime and niches in view of a systems analysis of sustainable higher education. The focus was on Ecocampus' key objectives: experimenting with sustainability challenges; attention for sustainable development in research, education and student activities; action competence of teachers, researchers and students; and a sustainable and entrepreneurial culture in higher education institutions. For this project, we collaborated with IDEA Consult that developped, tried out and assessed an evaluation system for the Ecocampus programme connected to the above described system analysis.

The project ended in March 2018 with the finalisation of the extensive final research report. Besides identifying a series of trends on the landscape level, characteristics of the contemporary regime and a series of sustainability niches, the report also describes a number of lock-ins and internal contradictions within the current regime, and a series of important instigators for sustainable development in higher education. The report finishes with 17 opportunities for so called policy entrepreneurs.
