Erik Paredis is associate professor "Transition governance and socio-technical system innovation for the circular economy" at the Department of Political Sciences, where he teaches the course "Politics of Sustainability" and the university-wide elective course "Sustainability Thinking" (both with colleague Thomas Block).

He has a PhD in political science, a Masters degree in Economics and in Germanic Philology. His research interests include the politics of sustainable development, sustainability transitions, governance approaches, the role of civil society, of science and technology, and North-South issues of sustainability. Thematically, this research addresses the circular economy in a broad sense. Previously, he worked on topics such as food, building, climate, ecological debt and sustainable cities. 

He is involved as promotor in several national and international research networks, often related to the circular economy, such as SuPER-W 'Resource, Product and Energy Recovery from Wastewater' (EU-Marie Curie ITN 2016-2020), C-PlaNeT 'Circular Plastics Network for Training' (EU-Marie Curie ITN 2020-2024), Energy-X (2019-2020), ITN Infinity 'Bioresource recovery from organo-biological residues and wastes' (2019-2024), IOF End-of-Waste (2019-2024), ITN SEDwise 'Sustainability education' (2015-2020).

He is an active member of Transition UGent, socio-cultural transition networks such as Pulse (cultural sector) and Transitienetwerk Middenveld (civil society), and is a board member of Bond Beter Leefmilieu (environmental movement).

Erik Paredis is hoofddocent 'Transitiesturing en socio-technische systeeminnovatie voor de circulaire economie' and de Vakgroep Politieke Wetenschappen. Hij doceert de vakken 'Politieke Vraagstukken van Duurzaamheid' en het universiteitsbrede keuzevak 'Duurzaamheidsdenken' (beide samen met collega Thomas Block).

Hij heeft een Doctoraat in de Politieke Wetenschappen, een Licentiaat in de Economische Wetenschappen en in de Germaanse filologie. Zijn onderzoeksinteresses betreffen o.a. de politieke aspecten van duurzame ontwikkeling, duurzaamheidstransities, governance benaderingen voor duurzaamheid, de rol van de civiele samenleving, de rol van wetenschap en technologie, en Noord-Zuidthema's van duurzaamheid. Thematisch bevindt veel van dat werk zich in het brede domein van circulaire economie, maar hij heeft ook gewerkt rond voedsel en landbouw, wonen en bouwen. ecologische schuld en duurzame steden.
