Prof. Joost Dessein (°1971) is Associate Professor (tenured) at the department of Agricultural Economics (UGent), and an affiliated member of the Centre for Sustainable Development (UGent). He holds an Msc in Agricultural Engineering and a Msc and PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology, all of which obtained at the Catholic University of Louvain. Joost is president of the European Society for Rural Sociology.

Joost’s teaching and research expertise lies in the broad domain of Sociology of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. Teaching courses such as ‘Sociological perspectives on rural development’, ‘Food Policy’, ‘Sustainable Food Systems’, or an interactive seminar on rural development , Joost inspires his students to become critical and reflexive researchers and professionals. He is involved in the Stadsacademie, where he leads the work on Food Democracy.

With colleagues of the research group INSPIRA ( Institutional, Socio-economic and Political Issues in Rural-urban Areas) he focuses on the governance of local food system, and related themes such as social and environmental justice and food democracy. He also studies the political and epistemological context of agro-ecology and the role of different knowledge systems in the transitions of the food system.

His research has a strong though not exclusive focus on the Global South. Current examples are research into the foodscape of Dar Es Salaam, the role of international city networks in stimulating food democracy, resistance of rural movement in the context of land grabbing and the exploitation of natural resources, and the importance of local knowledge in dealing with societal challenges.
