Originally trained as a nuclear physicist (PhD 2001), I soon felt the urge to question the foundations of the scientific attitude and the intricate relationship between science, technology, and society. Since obtaining a postdoctoral fellowship in Science and Technology Studies from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) in 2007, I increasingly see myself as an interdisciplinary scientist who consciously operates at the intersection between fundamental research on the one hand and a normative engagement with sustainability and social justice on the other. Over the years, I have thus elaborated on the political nature of science and technology in various research domains such as climate policy, sustainability transitions, inter- and transdisciplinarity, and more recently responsible research and innovation. At times, my research is highly theoretical, leading for instance to a single-author in-depth conceptual publication, at other times I engage in hands-on transdisciplinary inquiries with actors who are, in one way or another, affected by the issue in question. This is reflected in a considerable number of high-level publications and conference contributions, mainly in the interwoven fields of philosophy of science and technology and science and technology studies, as well as vulgarizing reports and my engagement in working groups and consultative bodies. As an engaged researcher with a passion for creative writing, I make it my priority to regularly contribute an op-ed piece to a leading Belgian newspaper.

Oorspronkelijk opgeleid als kernfysicus (PhD 2001), voelde ik al snel de drang om de fundamenten van de wetenschappelijke attitude en de complexe relatie tussen wetenschap, technologie en maatschappij in vraag te stellen. Sinds het behalen van een postdoctoraal mandaat in Wetenschaps- en Technologiestudies (STS) van het Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) in 2007, zie ik mezelf steeds meer als een interdisciplinair wetenschapper die bewust opereert op het raakvlak tussen fundamenteel onderzoek enerzijds en een normatief engagement met duurzaamheid en sociale rechtvaardigheid anderzijds. In de loop der jaren heb ik zo de politieke aard van wetenschap en technologie belicht en verder uitgewerkt in verschillende domeinen zoals klimaatbeleid, duurzaamheidstransities, inter- en transdisciplinariteit, en meer recent verantwoord onderzoek en innovatie (RRI - Responsible Research and Innovation). Soms is mijn onderzoek zeer theoretisch van aard en leidt het tot een doorwrochte ’single-author' publicatie, andere keren voer ik heel praktijkgericht ‘transdisciplinair’ onderzoek uit in nauwe samenwerking met actoren die op de een of andere manier betrokken zijn bij het onderwerp in kwestie. Dit alles komt tot uiting in een aanzienlijk aantal hoogstaande publicaties en congresbijdragen, voornamelijk in de met elkaar verweven domeinen van wetenschaps- en techniekfilosofie en STS, alsmede in vulgariserende rapporten en mijn engagement in allerhande werkgroepen en adviesorganen. Als geëngageerd onderzoeker met een passie voor creatief schrijven, hou ik er aan om regelmatig een opiniestuk te schrijven voor krant of tijdschrift.
