Discoursanalyse rond klimaatkwesties

Climate change confronts us with a number of fundamental choices, which leads to interesting societal debates. For example, there is disagreement about the effects, causes and interactions between our consumption and production patterns, about the best climate strategies and measures that can be followed within certain sectors, and about how the costs and benefits should be distributed within society. This research focuses on these types of sustainability controversies, and tries to map the various arguments and positions in this regard.

More specifically, this project focuses on three central controversies. These relate to aviation (“Is flying still justified?”), meat production and consumption (“Meat or no meat?”) and the industrial transition (“Is hydrogen of CCU the future?”). Based on a discourse analysis of the arguments and societal positions concerning these controversies, we try to get a better picture of the techno-scientific perspectives (which technologies are needed for the transition?) and the underlying world views (in which world do we want to live in?) on which the positions are grafted. A discourse is understood as a shared way of approaching the world or an issue. Information is then similarly connected, interpreted and translated into coherent stories.

In this analysis of the conflicting arguments, interests, assumptions, world views and coalitions, this research focuses on the debate in Belgium. Such an analysis will not immediately resolve the various controversies, but it can stimulate the democratic debate and increase the knowledge of different societal views on these controversies.

This research is carried out in collaboration with our partners at the Center D'Etudes du Développment Durable (CEDD) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The researchers involved are Prof. dr. Dr. Tom Bauler, Dr. Romain Weikmans and Dr. Marine Lugen.

Klimaatverandering stelt ons als samenleving voor een aantal fundamentele keuzes, wat leidt tot heel wat maatschappelijk debat. Zo bestaat er onder andere onenigheid over effecten, oorzaken en verbanden tussen onze consumptie- en productiepatronen, over de beste klimaatstrategieën en -maatregelen die kunnen gevolgd worden binnen bepaalde sectoren, en over hoe de kosten en baten verdeeld zouden moeten worden binnen de samenleving. Dit onderzoek spitst zich toe op dit soort duurzaamheidscontroverses, en probeert de verschillende maatschappelijke posities hieromtrent in kaart te brengen.

Meer concreet richt dit project zich op drie centrale controverses. Deze hebben betrekking op luchtvaart (is vliegen nog verantwoord?), vleesproductie- en consumptie (vlees of geen vlees?) en de industriële transitie (is waterstof de toekomst?). Op basis van een discoursanalyse van de maatschappelijke posities omtrent deze controverses proberen we zowel een beter beeld te krijgen van de techno-wetenschappelijke standpunten (welke technologieën zijn nodig voor de transitie?) als de onderliggende wereldbeelden (in welke wereld willen we level? Welke waarden worden naar voor geschoven, en hoe worden deze ingevuld?) waarop de posities geënt zijn. Een discours wordt hier begrepen als een gedeelde manier om de wereld of een kwestie te benaderen. Informatie wordt dan op eenzelfde manier verbonden, geïnterpreteerd en vertaald in coherente verhalen.

In de analyse van de conflicterende argumenten, belangen, aannames, wereldbeelden en coalities wordt in dit onderzoek telkens gefocust op het debat in België. Dergelijke analyse zal de verschillende controverses niet meteen beslechten, maar kan wel het democratisch debat stimuleren en de kennis van verschillende maatschappelijke standpunten inzake deze controverses vergroten.

Dit onderzoek gebeurt in samenwerking met onze partners bij het Centre D'Etudes du Développment Durable (CEDD) van de Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). De betrokken onderzoekers zijn Prof. Dr. Tom Bauler, Dr. Romain Weikmans en Dr. Marine Lugen.
